Before you leave:
- Look for supermarkets near your accomodation and take screenshots of how to get there
- Look for cheap restaurants and cafes near your accomodation – use the restaurant search feature on Google Maps and set the pound/dollar sign to $ or $$ at most.
- Make yourself a packed lunch the day of the journey. Prepare a sandwich, bring some fruit and do not forget your water bottle.
During your trip:
If you stay in an Airbnb, this one is easy. Go grocery shopping for quick and easy meals, e.g. pasta and rice or frozen ready-meals – you don’t want to spend hours on cooking and cleaning. If you stay somewhere without a kitchen, the cost of eating out could ruin the entire trip so here are some suggestions:
- Go grocery shopping in the morning. Buy fruit, pastry and bread and small packs of cheese, hummus, jam, etc.
- Have a picnic or eat in your accomodation. Iced coffee from a supermarket is a very good and cheap alternative to regular coffee!
- Keep a few slices to prepare sandwiches for lunch and/or dinner
- Consider buying ready meals (e.g. pasta salad) at a supermarket for lunch/dinner
- Try to limit eating out to maximum once a day – get take-away instead of dining in as it tends to be cheaper
- Don’t forget to make a packed lunch for your return journey!
